Why build this interface?
Currently, Ontario lacks a centralized vaccine booking sytem. There are around 100+ different booking systems based on city, health network, neighbourhood, level of government (provincial, regional, municipal). This fragmented booking system has lead citizens to book with multiple clinics to secure an early appointment which inadvertently lead to many other citizens not getting a booking slot.
Another need for a better experience is that usability of many of the booking systems is challenging for many citizens to book an appointment.
How might we create a single COVID vaccine booking system that allows Ontarians to easily book an appointment?
Breaking down the goal
TASK ANALYSIS
We drew a task analysis diagram to understand the different steps involved in the process of making a vaccine appointment. This helped us create an interface that is clean intuitive and easy to understand.

Design for a hands free experience
VOICE ASSISTANT
We used the Voice Flow app to prototype a voice assistant for the OVAC (Ontario vaccination app). The assistant is capable of booking, modifying, or canceling an appointment. Additionally, it can also set reminders and can connect with a public health professional when needed. We started with a flow chart to map out the user flow with the assistant to built responses into the prototype.
Formalizing the user's flow
USER FLOW
Next, the team drew a user flow chart to finalize and formalize a user's flow through the app.

Designing the interface
HIGH FIDELITY UI PROTOTYPE
Next, the team started working on a high-fidelity prototype. We used Figma as our primary tool to design the interface as well as prototype the UI.

Registration
We designed a 2 step process to first verify eligibility and then register to create an account. We also added a feature to scan a health card to auto-fill details.

User Onboarding
We created a logo animation as part of the onboarding experience. The screens that follow give the user a glimpse of what the app can do. This helps in setting context before asking the user to fill in details or register.

Appointment booking
We created an easy-to-navigate booking process by only showing the information needed at every step. The app also provides a voice assistant to make an appointment, modify or contact help.

EXPERIENCE DESIGN
We wanted to create a delightful experience for the user and as an experience is not just limited to digital we designed the whole user experience from booking an appointment on the app to getting their vaccine shot. The video below illustrates the experience design.
